A Will Protects Your Assets, Your Wishes, and Your Loved Ones

August is National Make a Will Month, making it a great time to tackle one of the most important (and most commonly delayed) parts of a financial plan.

An estimated 2/3 of American adults do not have an up-to-date will. Let’s review some of the most important reasons to have a will.

A will allows you to:

  • Decide how your assets will be distributed
  • Name guardians for minor children
  • Choose the person who will carry out your wishes (your executor)
  • Help reduce confusion and potential conflict among family members
  • Ensure your estate is administered according to your wishes rather than your state's default laws

Keep in mind that a will is only one piece of a comprehensive estate plan. Beneficiary designations, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and possibly trusts are also important tools to review regularly.

If it has been years since you last updated your will or if you've never created one, consider making August the month you finally check this off your list. Life changes such as marriage, the birth of a child or grandchild, divorce, or significant changes in your finances are all good reasons to revisit your estate plan.

One of the greatest gifts you can leave your family isn't just financial assets. Having your wishes documented can provide peace of mind for both you and the people you love. It can also help ensure that they have less stress and legal delays settling your estate.
